Description
A minority spelling for the third person masculine singular pronominal suffix in the Masoretic Text (MT) of the Hebrew Bible is with the letter he rather than the regular spelling with waw. This study first of all attempts to demonstrate patterns in the distribution of these forms in the Masoretic Text. It then surveys our other Hebrew biblical texts, in particular the Samaritan Pentateuch, Qumran, and the Nash Papyrus, to ascertain whether they contain evidence of a different pattern of distribution of he suffixes to that of the Masoretic Text. While some variation is found, no significantly different profiles emerge. This stability implies that Hebrew texts exhibiting widespread variation from the Masoretic Text pattern of spelling of this suffix are far removed from any of the biblical textual evidence we currently possess. 1.
